Frequently Asked Questions

  • The initial consultation with Brisbane Fertility Specialist Dr Stamatiou is deemed a gynaecological consultation to determine if and what fertility treatments are recommended. You will need to obtain a referral for both you and your partner from your GP to obtain a Medicare rebate. Depending on your situation, your GP may have already performed some investigations or it may be obvious you need to see a fertility specialist early.

You can expect your initial visit as a couple to take 60 – 90 minutes. Dr Stamatiou will take a comprehensive history and perform an appropriate examination. The likely causes of infertility will be discussed and investigations will be organised. A follow-up meeting will be arranged to review the results and formulate a treatment plan specific to your needs. These discussions are private and are treated with confidentiality and discretion.

  • Each case is unique, but generally, treatments like IVF can take several weeks from start to finish.

  • Success rates can vary based on various factors like age and the specific treatment. We'll discuss this thoroughly in your consultation.

  • Some treatments may involve injections or minor surgical procedures. While they can be uncomfortable, they are usually well-tolerated.

  • Costs can vary widely depending on the treatment. We'll provide a detailed breakdown during your initial consultation.

  • Certain techniques like Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) can identify the gender of embryos, but ethical guidelines may apply.

  • Age can impact the success of fertility treatments, but there's no strict age limit. We assess each case individually.

  • Typically, yes. A referral from your GP ensures that we can give you the most targeted advice and treatment options.

  • Bring any relevant medical records and be prepared to discuss your medical history so we can tailor a treatment plan for you.

  • While some people are successful on their first try, many people require multiple cycles to achieve pregnancy.

  • Generally, if you've been trying for a year with no success (or 6 months if you're over 35), it may be time to consult with a specialist.
