Endometriosis

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a medical condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus (endometrium) grows outside of it, commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis. These growths can cause pain, inflammation, and scarring.

What Are The Symptoms & Causes?

Symptoms of endometriosis may include pelvic pain, painful periods, pain during or after sex, pain when passing urine and infertility.  The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown, but hormonal, genetic, and immune factors are believed to play a role.

What Can Happen If It Goes Untreated?

If endometriosis goes untreated, it can lead to various complications and negative impacts on a person's health such as:

It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management of endometriosis to mitigate these potential risks and improve overall health outcomes.

How Is Endometriosis Diagnosed?

Endometriosis is typically diagnosed through a combination of medical history assessment, pelvic examination, imaging studies such as ultrasound or MRI, and the gold standard diagnostic procedure called laparoscopy.

During laparoscopy, a small camera is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen to directly visualise the pelvic organs and identify any endometrial implants. Tissue samples may be taken for confirmation.

The decision to undergo laparoscopy depends on factors like symptoms, treatment response, and individual circumstances, and should be made by a qualified healthcare professional experienced in managing endometriosis.

How Is Endometriosis Treated?

Endometriosis can be treated with several options:

Medication

Over-the-counter medication to help alleviate mild to moderate pain. Stronger prescription pain medications may be recommended for more severe pain.

Hormonal Therapies

Contraception and UID devices can be used if you are not planning on getting pregnant, which reduce the growth of endometrial tissue.

Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic surgery can be performed to remove endometrial implants, adhesions, and cysts.

Surgery to Remove Organs

In more advanced cases, a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) may be considered.
